The past few months have been a whirlwind for Career and Technical Education (CTE) leaders, with members of the West Virginia ACTE team attending major conferences and celebrating outstanding achievements in the field. From meeting national keynote speakers to recognizing award winners and presenting at regional conferences, the momentum for WV ACTE continues to grow.
Region 1 ACTE Conference – Recognizing Excellence in CTE
In March, WV ACTE President, Deborah Chapman, Executive Secretary, Veronica Barron, and the West Virginia Department of Education’s Assistant Superintendent of the Division of Pk-Adult Instruction & Career Engagement, Clinton Burch, attended the Region 1 ACTE Conference in Foxborough, MA. At the conference’s awards luncheon, West Virginia nominees for ACTE Regional Awards were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the CTE community. the following individuals were announced as Region 1 award winners:

Region 1 Jim Hannerman Leadership and Service Award
Deborah Chapman, retired WV CTE Teacher and WV ACTE President
This prestigious award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of CTE within Region 1.
Region 1 Carl D. Perkins Community Service Award
Clinton Burch, Assistant Superintendent of the West Virginia Department of Education
Superintendent Burch’s work has made significant impact on CTE and will be recognized at the national level during ACTE’s Visions Conference in December 2025.


Region 1 Outstanding Business Partnership Award
Monica Cross, West Virginia Manufacturing Association Educational Fund
This award highlights a business partnership that has significantly supported the development of CTE in Region 1. This award exemplifies the power of collaboration in advancing CTE goals.
Mixing Skills and Flavors – Culineering Challenge Featured at the Region 1 Conference
In addition to recognition of Region 1 award recipients, West Virginia presented an engaging session for attendees. Clinton Burch and Sara Schonour, Lighting Engineer and Netflix Cast Member, presented the “Culineering Challenge: Mixing Skills & Flavors” workshop. This engaging presentation explored the intersection of culinary skills and experiential learning. The session showcased how CTE can incorporate creativity, practical skills, and real-world experience and inspired attendees to consider innovative ways to integrate diverse skills into CTE.
